When I Stop Talking, You’ll Know I’m Dead By JERRY WEINTRAUB

every minute doing one thing is a minute not doing something else, every choice is another choice not made, another path grown over and lost.

Note:

Have you ever sat at a coffee shop and listened to a group of older people talk about their life experiences? Well, this is how this book made me feel. My favorite chapter in this book is The Producer, this chapter made me laugh, and I hope it makes you laugh as well.

insights:

it’s not the gem a person buys. It’s the story behind the gem.

💭Today’s most prominent brands have a great story behind them. A few examples are Mr. Beast, Walt Disney, Tommy Hilfiger, and Chanel. A brand that has stood the test of time is Chanel. Many young people might not know the story of Chanel or how it started, but those who do know have solid loyalty to the brand.

You might have the greatest talent in the world, but it doesn’t matter if you can’t sell it.

💭Imagine the iPhone was created, and there was no Steve Jobs to sell the product. Do you still think Apple would be the company it is today?

People will pay you to make their lives easier; always take the time to make the pitch; personal service is the name of the game;

💭Have you ever paid for groceries? Most likely, you have at a point in your life. And if you haven’t, you either grew them yourself or paid someone to purchase them. Someone had to take time to grow them and prep them for transportation to make their way to the store. People were paid one way or another to make your life easier. You could have grown them but decided you didn’t want to or didn’t have time or space to grow them.

This much I knew: As soon as you feel comfortable, that’s when it’s time to start over.

💡 I was taught that waking up the next day after a workout it’s always good to feel a minor soreness. And if you didn’t feel a little soreness, you didn’t push yourself. Many people will say that’s not normal, but to me, it has always made sense. How else do I know I’m pushing myself toward my goal?

If you knew how time works, you would never do anything.

💭Try to remember a happy memory that you wish you could relive again. Ask yourself if you would stop time to stay in that moment.

At the end of the day, write down exactly what you have. Put that number in your left pocket. Then write down exactly what you owe. Put that number in your right pocket. As long as the number in your left pocket is bigger than the number in your right pocket, you will have a good life.

💭By far, the best way to simplify personal finance for anyone.

The point is, do not get attached to the world as it is, because the world is changing, something new is coming, every ten years a big hand comes down and sweeps the dishes off the table.

💡I always find it funny when people say back then, life was easier when….. Etc. Only because the person is not willing to adapt to the new environment. People always say it’s the older folks, but if you ask me, it’s anyone who has a close-minded mindset.

An idea is only crazy, after all, until someone pulls it off.

💡Elon Musk and his story with SpaceX rockets is an excellent example. A few decades ago, NASA would only use spaceships once and wouldn’t repurpose them. Now, as of today, we can reuse the rockets. When the idea was proposed the first time, everybody thought that his company would fail, and so would he.

I always sleep with a notepad on the table so I can write down ideas that come in the night.

💭I am 95% sure nighttime was the time he would allow his mind to wander and think freely of how to solve problems without Interruptions.

The person who makes it is the person who keeps on going after everyone else has quit. This is more important than intelligence, pedigree, even connections. Be dogged! Keep hitting that door until you bust it down! I have accomplished almost nothing on the first or second or even the third try—the breakthrough usually comes late, when everyone else has left the field.

I would never sell an idea like this on the phone. It’s still that way. I need to sit with a person, to watch him, read his eyes and hands, see if he is just as excited as I am, if I’m coming across.

💡 Any meaningful conversations should always be made in person.

It’s nearly impossible to succeed in the world and also succeed in the house, which means, at some level, even if you do not realize it, you make a choice.

💭 I think this is true. It’s hard to move quickly in your career when your kid needs a little attention, and at times your kid might need all the attention.

I sat there for a moment, thinking about what this meant, what my gut was telling me. It was not making the calls that bothered me. It was having to make the calls.

💭 I’ve been in this spot many times. When I sit and wonder if I’m happy. I ask myself, is this my life goal? Am I satisfied with my current environment, and if I’m not, what do I need to do to be happy?

Memorable Quotes:

It would be great if you could preserve the first vision of a place that would become important to you, but later experience gets tangled up with memory until what came later changes what came before.

Relationships are the only thing that really matters, in business and in life. That’s what I learned from Abraham Levitt.

It was needs and opportunities, money to be made. Once you see the world this way, things are never the same.

I’m describing how I built my network, which is a key to my success. A lot depends on who you know, who you can get to. If you have people who will open the door for you, literally and figuratively, you can make a pitch. It’s in your hands from there.

even if you have the greatest script in the world, it won’t work if the actors don’t play their parts

The experience taught an important lesson: Work with the best people. If you have the best writers, the best actors, and the best director and fail, okay, fine, there is even something noble in it; but if you fail with garbage, then you are left with nothing to hang your spirits on. Besides, life is too short to be spent in the company of morons.

You have to be willing to walk away from the most comfortable perch, precisely because it is the most comfortable.
